July 21, 2025- Mount Clemens Post Office Dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson

On Monday, July 21, 2025, Mount Clemens Post Office at 11:00a.m., a formal dedication ceremony was held at the Mount Clemens Post Office located at 155 South Main Street, Mount Clemens, Michigan 48043.  The post office was officially designated as the "Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson Post Office" to honour the lifetime of service of Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson.  The naming was made possible by federal legislation introduced by Gary Peters (U.S. Senator, Michigan) signed into law October 2024.

Lt Col Alex Jefferson

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson was born November 15, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology from Clark College in 1942.  Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson completed pilot training at the Tuskegee Army Airfield in 1944 and served as a P-51 "Red Tail" fighter pilot with the 332nd Fighter Group (the famed Tuskegee Airmen) based in Ramitelli, Italy.  Oh his 19th mission he was shot down over Toulon, France; he was captured by German forces and held as a prisoner of war in Poland, later liberated by the U.S. Third Army under General Patton.  After the war, he returned to Michigan, worked as a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, earned a teaching certificate, and obtained a Master's in Education from Wayne State University.  He retired from the U.S. Reserves in 1969 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and after 31 years in Detroit Public Schools (retiring as an assistant principal in 1979) he passed away on June 22, 2022.  Among his recognitions were the Purple Heart (2001) and, as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the Congressional Gold Medal (2007).
